‘I will put a bullet in your head’: Agoc Deng Shok jailed for frightening southeast rampage

A violent robber who was out on bail went into a Cranbourne North 7-Eleven, lined up four terrified customers and then told an employee he’d shoot him if he didn’t hand over cash. But they didn’t know the fiend’s weapon was “a very realistic imitation”.

A ruthless menace threatened to put a “bullet” in the heads of two men and shoot a 7-Eleven employee during a terrifying southeast rampage where he crashed through a red light at high speed to escape police.

Agoc Deng Shok, 24, was on bail when he drove a stolen Mercedes to the Prince Mark Hotel in Doveton just before 7am on January 7, 2018.

Shok attempted to break into a room at the hotel where two men were inside.

The victims tried to shut him out so he pulled out an imitation gun.

“You have five seconds to open the door or I will put a bullet in your head,” he said.

Shok began counting so the terrified victims barricaded themselves in the bathroom.

The thug left a thong in the room and fled.

Several hours later, after committing two petrol run-offs at service stations in Narre Warren and Lynbrook, Shok wrapped a towel around his head, put his hoodie up and entered the Cranbourne North 7-Eleven, the County Court heard.

He whipped out the gun and lined up four customers at the front counter.

Other customers began to scream as Shok threatened to shoot the attendant if he didn’t “hurry up” and hand over cash.

Shok put down the gun, grabbed $600 from the till and fled in the Mercedes.

He was spotted by police — who had an operation in play to haul in the tearaway fiend — not long after the 7-Eleven job.

Officers tried to intercept him but Shok put his foot down and drove at an estimated 95km/h through a bottle shop carpark and over a garden bed.

Shok swung back onto the road where he sped towards two cars stopped at a red light.

He caused major damage to the Mercedes when he tried to drive between the cars but despite almost losing a wheel he made it through and kept going.

Police terminated the pursuit to help the occupants of the two cars, who escaped uninjured.

Shok dumped the car not long after and fled on foot through a retirement village.

He made it to a bus stop where he was approached by police looking for a person matching Shok’s description.

Shok identified himself to police “in a very calm manner” and was allowed to board the bus.

He was arrested three days later where he denied much of his offending.

Shok was to stand trial but changed his plea to guilty after Judge Meryl Sexton ruled the “lies he told police” could be entered as evidence.

He was sentenced in the County Court on September 4 to a minimum three years and nine months after pleading guilty to several charges including armed robbery.

Judge Sexton said Shok, who has a lengthy criminal history, has “guarded prospects of rehabilitation”.

She said the “terrified” victims did not know the gun was fake.

“All of them would’ve been extremely frightened as a result of your actions especially your wielding of the gun which was a very realistic imitation,” she said.

Shok who also pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated burglary, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, theft and being a prohibitive person using an imitation handgun was sentenced to a maximum of six years and seven months in prison.

He had spent 582 days in custody at the time of sentencing.
