Hoons boasting about illegal burnouts on social media

New footage has emerged of hoons ripping up suburban streets and industrial areas, showing the full extent of the nightmare suffered by locals in Keysborough, Cranbourne and surrounds for years.

Hoons are boasting of illegal burnouts on social media, with disturbing footage showing them ripping up suburban streets and industrial areas in Melbourne’s southeast.

The Leader has been sent footage of hoons from underground group South East Skids performing dangerous burnouts at busy intersections, country roads and industrial estates.

Secret messages between the underground hoons organising a meet were also shown to Leader, with one of them even being made public on Instagram saying: “Rembember not to drive like a bunch of f***wits, we don’t want unnecessary attention. If cops come detour”.

Several neighbours and business owners in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia say they’re “fed up” with hoon behaviour and want police to crack down further.

Earlier this month, shocking footage also emerged of a reckless hoon railroading a bushfire charity event after performing dangerous burnouts just metres from police.

A 17-year-old boy from Bayswater North was released pending further investigation.

Davide, surname withheld, who owns a business in an industrial area on Indian Drive in Keysborough, said hoons were “out of control” and feared it was only a “matter of time” before someone got seriously hurt.

“It’s been happening for two years now. I’m constantly calling the police and the council. They leave burnout marks and popped tyres and a mess everywhere – it’s just so dangerous – they’re risking their lives,” he said.

Breanna, last name withheld, of Pakenham said her neighbours were constantly “fearful” of hoons.

“The road leading to it and out the front of it – Caversham Drive – has endless amounts of burnouts and tyre marks left everywhere – we’re fed up,” she said.

“We often hear them during the evenings and late at night zooming up and down using it as a drag strip or their burnout zone.

“Families in the area with small children think this is a big problem that disturbs us all and the look of this street is horrible.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Tim Dark said he had received multiple complaints about hoons in the past three months.

“It’s not the right thing to do and hoons deserve harsher penalties,” Cr Dark said.

“There’s a time and a place for this and I strongly think there should be somewhere where they can go to do this, such as Sandown Park.”

A Cranbourne East woman, who asked not to be named in fear of hoons that continued to “terrorise” her street, said people living in the Hunt Club were desperate for more speed humps in the area.

“We are sick and tired of them – we have called the police numerous times and of course we get nowhere. The neighbours are all sick of them terrorising our street,” she said.

“We hope the council can put more speed humps in the area as this will deter them.”

Nate Gigovic from GamesTechAuto, who runs a car enthusiast YouTube channel, said there was always “one idiot” who ruined car meet events.

“Every time this (burnouts) happens, meets get shut down, we all look like criminals with so much police attention even though 99.9 per cent of us have our cars parked up and are just having a chat with mates,” Mr Gigovic said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police had “zero-tolerance” towards any motorists who exceed the speed limit or engage in reckless activity that puts themselves or others at risk.

“Police are aware of high-risk driving activity across the Casey Police Service Area.

Highway patrol and uniform officers regularly conduct visible patrols across all areas to address this type of behaviour,” the spokeswoman said.

“Following reports of hoon activity, police are specifically tasked to carry out extra patrols.

Operation Sumatra is also carried out regularly across the Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.”
