St Leonard’s College postpones student China trip amid coronavirus fears

A private school in Brighton has called off an imminent student trip as the coronavirus death toll grows, changing travel plans just weeks before more than 100 Year 9 pupils were due to head to China and nearby countries.

An elite Brighton school has pulled the plug on an imminent overseas student trip as the coronavirus death toll grows.

More than 100 Year 9 students at St Leonard’s College were due to head to Asia as part of an annual education program.

One group was due to go to China and another to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

But Principal Stuart Davis last night announced the three-week adventure would be postponed, citing health concerns.

In an email sent to parents, and seen by the Leader, Mr Davis said it would be “inappropriate to forge ahead” with a term 1 departure.

“It is evident that there is a level of concern that we are all feeling,” he said.

“As parents we wish to know that our children are safe and enjoying a rich and rewarding experience when venturing abroad, and not be anxious because of the potential impact of a known health concern.”

Mr Davis said he was responding to parents’ concerns.

Mr Davis said the trip — which cost parents nearly $5000 — would be postponed until October.

He confirmed all costs directly relating to travel, including flight cancellation fees, would be covered by the school.

“The timing of my decision is significant as the final date for receiving any refund is upon us,” he said.

“I recognise that this change may raise a number of issues yet to be considered and I welcome learning about these in the near future,” he said.

A parent, who does not want to be named, told the Leader the school had made the right decision.

“I’m completely happy with the decision and I know a lot of other parents are too,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to several parents who were concerned (about going) and the kids were also worried so to postpone the trip until October is a good decision.”

In another email, Mr Davis urged all parents to implement DET hygiene recommendations.

“I can confirm that the College has communicated directly with all families who live in the areas of concern to ensure they do not return prior to completing the incubation period in an environment that is not deemed to be at risk,” Mr Davis added.
