A failed Melbourne businessman cut a deal to sell heroin and cocaine to three undercover cops and even offered to fly them to Sydney to bring back more drugs, a court has heard.
Gursewak Singh, 35, unemployed of Wollert, told three operatives he was a bulk supplier who made $40,000 to $50,000 a day and could source 50kg with a day’s notice.
The father-of-two pleaded guilty in the County Court on Wednesday to trafficking in a commercial quantity of heroin, cocaine, trafficking morphine and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
The charge of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime relates to $550,000 that was deposited into Singh’s bank account by eight people from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia who were conned into investing in bonds through a company that he controlled.
When police came knocking in August 2022, his wife told officers that Singh had left for work at Australia Post but he was found hiding under a bed.
He claimed the $550,000 was part of a loan organised by a third person. His drug offending followed the investment scam.
Prosecutor Peter Pickering told the court that three covert operatives went to the
Spring Square shopping centre in Hallam on August 10, 2023 and parked their car near Singh’s vehicle.
When Singh spotted a bag of drugs in the operatives’ car, he said “It’s what we do” and retrieved a bundle of cash and said “We do everything”.
When a covert operative clarified what he meant, he said “We do everything. We don’t do it, we sell it”. When asked if he sold cocaine, he confirmed this while pointing to the cash in his hand. He introduced himself as “Sunny” telling the operatives that he was a bulk supplier and that there was no point unless “you make $40,000 to $50,000 per night”. They asked if they could buy cocaine that night and Singh said he had sold the last of his cocaine but had heroin available and handed over a plastic bag with the drug in it.
In subsequent meetings, Singh showed them a picture of a vacuum sealed bag with 22kg of cocaine that was arriving the next day.
He said “bricks” were coming from Sydney and offered to fly the covert operatives to Sydney to bring it back.
Singh said he was a “ghost” who would not deal with them directly but would give them locations for collection of drugs and dropping off money.
The covert operatives agreed to purchase 500 grams each of heroin and cocaine on September 1 and they met at Storage King in Epping where he was arrested.
Singh will be sentenced on April 9.
