Governor Road Braeside: Renewed push to duplicate dangerous road

Motorists fed up with traffic jams and trucks along a busy Braeside road hope to finally get some relief before the state election.

A group of eight councils is backing a push for a truck-clogged corridor in Melbourne’s south east to finally be upgraded.

With the state election looming, Kingston City councillor Cameron Howe is renewing his campaign to duplicate Governor Rd.

The arterial road, between Boundary Rd and Springvale Rd in Braeside, is a two-lane link off the Mordialloc Freeway and is frequently used by freight vehicles, with motorists and councils pushing for funding to ease traffic and improve safety conditions.

Feedback was sought earlier this year after the government committed to look into the potential upgrade of the road which found nine out of ten people supported an upgrade.

It also found 88 per cent of the road users had concerns when travelling on Governor Rd, with 68 per cent concerned about safety and 66 per cent worried about traffic flow.

One respondent said the road is “often difficult and dangerous to navigate” while another called the busy roundabout an “accident prone” link.

Studies are now being undertaken which will determine the timeline and relevance of this project and will be finalised in early 2023.

Cr Howe has advocated for the road duplication since 2018 and said the move is long “overdue”.

“If the sleepy state government was awake at the wheel, taxpayer money could have been used efficiently to complete the Mordialloc Freeway and overdue Governor Rd duplication together,” he said.

The road is partially duplicated at the freeway ramps, but councils are calling for the full duplication through government funding.

“It was inept not to have included the full duplication at the time of building the Mordialloc Freeway,” he said.

“We need the government to step up and put the funds where it’s needed right here in the southeast.”

The duplication is featured as a key project on the Southeast Transport Strategy and is backed by eight councils — Kingston, Casey, Cardinia, Dandenong, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Ranges and Bass Coast.

A recommendation to replace the three-lane roundabout with traffic signals is also highlighted.
