A BRAVE tradie has foiled a wannabe robber armed with a box cutter who was trying to hold up a Frankston 7-Eleven.

The Frankston TAFE student on his morning break wrestled the weapon from the Hastings man who had allegedly threatened to stab the female store attendant after demanding cash.

Frankston crime investigation unit detective Sergeant Alistair Boyd said the 43-year-old had tried to steal a flavoured milk drink earlier that morning but the attendant spotted it down his pants and asked him to pay.

He said the man returned to the store on Beach St with the box cutter behind his back about 10.45am on July 31.

“He said he had a knife and would stab her,” Sgt Boyd said.

The man’s stick up was interrupted by a brave tradie who walked into the shop and saw the thief threatening the worker with the knife.

He boldly snatched it from the man and told him to leave the store.

Pat Frisby, 25, told 7 News the “deranged man” turned around quite shocked when he grabbed the weapon from him.

“I’m pretty proud but I think anyone would have done it,” he said.

Sgt Boyd said the would-be robber tried to hide in a nearby laundromat but police quickly arrived and arrested him still inside.

The Hastings man was charged with attempted armed robbery and breaching bail and was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
