Frankston teen rampage: mum fends off thugs as community calls for police action on crime

Three teen thugs are behind bars after a violent crime spree through the Frankston CBD.

Police launched a manhunt for the trio on June 17 after a man, 25, was knocked unconscious in a fight near the Frankston Bowls Club just after 8pm.

The teenagers ran off to Gould St, where they got more than they bargained for when they tried to steal a car from a mum, who chased them away as her 10-year-old son watched on.

Their lawless night ended in arrest after they attacked and robbed two skateboarders near the beach.

Police caught up with a Cranbourne man, 19, a Morwell man, 18, and a 16-year-old boy shortly afterwards and they were charged with attempted carjacking, robbery, assault and affray.

They were remanded and will front court at a later date.

Their rampage comes as more than 2500 concerned citizens took part in the Community Safety Network survey, naming crime, including home invasion, drugs and dangerous driving, as Frankston’s top safety issues.

The results have prompted police to launch the Frankston First Community Network - a collaboration between police, community leaders and locals.

Frankston Inspector Paul Cripps called it an “opportunity to interact with local police, gain a greater understanding of other community groups and have an impact on issues affecting the community”.

Frankston mother Claire Seabury said anything that made her family feel safer was a “good idea”.

“The majority of people in Frankston are lovely, but there are a few dodgy ones around here so I want to be assured the police understand the issues,” she said.

Tomorrow’s network launch — at the Mechanics Hall at 12.30pm — is open to the public.
