A young man involved in the theft of thousands of dollars worth of designer sunglasses was later busted with spray paint and fireworks in his backpack at a train station.
Zachary Walton, 21, appeared in the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and other charges relating to the possession of explosives.
Walton, of Frankston, who worked as a welder, was a part of a group who went to Sunglasses Hut on Bourke St in Melbourne in February last year.
While the court heard Walton only walked out with one pair of glasses without paying he was a part of the overall theft which included more than 10 pairs of sunglasses from brands such as Gucci and Dior — altogether the theft was valued at $10,950.
Magistrate Nunzio La Rosa admitted Walton’s involvement in the theft had been small but he was complicit in the entire act.
“This was clearly a targeted venture,” he said.
“At a time when they (the business) were no doubt trying to recover from the upheaval of covid.”
A few days after his illegal shopping spree Walton was stopped by Public Safety Officers at the Frankston railway station after he failed to touch on his myki.
The officers searched Walton’s bag as he had paint on his clothes and they believed he could have been involved in graffiti.
In his bag they found six aerosol spray paint cans and two small fireworks.
The court heard Walton “didn’t realise” the fireworks were in his bag.
He was fined $11,000 with a conviction.
