A speedster student with a disqualified licence was caught driving because he “had a fight” with his dad.

Murray Lowater, 27, appeared in the Frankston Magistrates Court’ on Monday where he pleaded guilty to a string of driving and dishonesty offences.

In January 2020 Lowater used a stolen bank card to buy cigarettes and energy drinks from petrol stations in Seaford and Carrum Downs.

In total he made almost $300 worth of purchases on the stolen card.

Lowater was then caught a few months later driving in Frankston North, despite being disqualified for an extensive period.

He told police he had to drive because he had a “fight with (his) dad”.

He was busted driving again in Frankston North in October 2020, this time in an unregistered car.

On this occasion he told police he had just purchased the Ford Falcon Ute earlier that day and was unaware it was not registered.

In August 2022 Lowater continued his road-related offending all the way up in Horsham where he was stopped by police for travelling at excessive speeds down the Northern Hwy.

In a 100km/h zone Lowater was clocked doing 118km/h — he was still disqualified and unlicensed at the time.

The court heard he told police he “didn’t realise (he) was going that quick (sic)”.

The 27-year-old student, who is studying content creation, had struggled with a heroin addiction after being released from custody at the beginning of Covid, the court heard.

Magistrate Nunzio La Rosa said he would have Lowater assessed for a community corrections order but there was “no guarantee” that was the sentence he would get.

“This is a man who ignores the order of the court,” he said.

“There is no guarantee he is going home tonight.”
