Floral tributes have been left outside a Cheltenham unit where a woman was killed in a fire.

A visibly upset neighbour left a vase of flowers outside the home on Monday morning, after the woman’s tragic death overnight.

The woman, believed to be aged about 70, was found in the bedroom of her Warribar Village unit, off Warrigal Rd, after the fire broke out about 4.30am Monday.

Police said the woman had yet to be formally identified and a crime scene had been established, with police working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.

A neighbour who did not want to be named phoned triple-0 to report the fire said he saw lots of flames and smoke coming from the home.

Another neighbour who did not wish to be named said he knew the woman who lived at the unit and was sad to hear about her death.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews wearing breathing apparatus worked to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.

An aggressive internal attack limited the damage and spread of the fire to the bedroom.

Fire Rescue Victoria said no neighbouring properties were damaged, and at this stage the

cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
