Police are urging commuters to come forward who witnessed two minor collisions before an elderly driver struck a tree and tragically died in Dandenong.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Princes Highway and Heatherton Rd on April 5 following reports of a collision.

It’s understood a man, who was driving a red 2013 Holden Cruze, was travelling along the highway when he crashed into a tree around 11.15am.

The 81-year-old Dandenong man died at the scene.

Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said the driver was involved in two other crashes within two kilometres of the final incident.

In the first crash, the driver collided with a white van on the Princes Highway, between Clow and Potter streets, about 10.50am.

The second crash involved the driver colliding with a Toyota Yaris at the intersection of Princes Highway and Jones Rd about 11.07am.

Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage of both crashes.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
