A frail 84-year-old man has been beaten in broad daylight outside a shopping centre.

Sydney Ellis was taken to hospital with a bruised, cut face, loose teeth and concussion after the cowardly attack at Carrum Downs Plaza.

Mr Ellis, who was out on one of his three daily 10-minute breaks from caring for his wife who has Alzheimer’s, was attacked as he allegedly tried to stop a young man from stealing his 11-year-old canine companion, Boyo, about 9am yesterday.

Mr Ellis’ daughter, Lydia Anne, told the Leader her dad was “very traumatised” and “worried about his wife”.

She said Mr Ellis was also very worried about Boyo, who had been caught up in the scuffle, and had vomited out of fear during the vicious attack

Ms Anne said the foxy cross had been tied to a pole outside Brumby’s when her dad saw a man in his 20s allegedly grab the dog and try to run away with it.

She said when Mr Ellis tried to get the dog back, he was repeatedly bashed around the face, head and neck.

Three nearby Coles employees heard the old man’s screams for help and chased the alleged attacker, who had run off with the dog.

“Onlookers chased the man and were able to rescue the dog,” Leading Senior Constable Rohan Imms said.

Another Coles employee called police and an ambulance while comforting Mr Ellis.

Ms Anne, said she and her kids were “in shock” at the incident.

“He was walking his dog for 10 minutes to pick up bread,” she said.

“He gets 30 minutes to himself each day, made up of three 10-minute walks with his dog.

“He needs these little breaks, as he is the full time carer for my mum, who has Advanced Alzheimer’s Dementia.”

Ms Anne said because of the cowardly attack her dad required extensive medical care at Frankston Hospital.

He was discharged this afternoon.
