Dylan Cassidy burgled Frankston house as elderly couple slept

Not satisfied with snatching jewellery from a Frankston home he ransacked while the elderly occupants slept, this 20-year-old scoffed orange juice from the fridge before fleeing in their car.

Cassidy said he thought the Frankston house he burgled was empty.

An elderly couple’s home was ransacked while they slept and the thief stole their car, a trailer, jewellery — and scoffed juice from the fridge as he fled.

Dylan Cassidy, 20, appeared by video link at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning after previously pleading guilty to a slew of theft, drug and driving charges.

Documents released to the Leader reveal between 1am and 2.30am on February 24 this year Cassidy walked up a Frankston driveway and took a garage door remote from inside a parked Holden Commodore.

Hooked up to the car was a trailer full of plants and tables the elderly couple had intended to take to a Sunday market later that day.

Cassidy used the remote to enter the garage, stealing power tools, and went through an internal door into their home. He searched rooms while the pair, aged 80 and 74, slept in a bedroom.

The Frankston man stole watches, keys to a Nissan Patrol, coins, a wallet and cuff links before going to the kitchen fridge and taking a bottle of orange juice, which he drank from, then discarded on the front lawn.

Cassidy, who doesn’t have a licence, stole the Commodore and the trailer, but he had left his fingerprints behind.

The court heard police caught up with him three days later at a Frankston house and found the car and trailer, now with stolen plates, a bag with the stolen power tools inside and several small bags of ice and cannabis.

Cassidy admitted burglary, although he said he didn’t know anyone was home, and confessed to drug possession and theft.

There was no application for bail and Cassidy was remanded to be sentenced at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on November 28.
