Drunk upset at State of Origin rugby smashed $5k TV at The Sporting Globe in Fountain Gate

The night turned sour for a salty State of Origin decider watcher at The Sporting Globe in Fountain Gate, with a TV bearing the brunt of his anger.

A booze-fuelled, salt shaker-throwing rugby league fan has been ordered to pay $5000 to a Fountain Gate pub after he smashed one of their TVs.

Liam Ryan had been smashing down schooners at The Sporting Globe in Narre Warren when he became angry at the way the State of Origin series decider was heading.

His mood soured and he took matters into his own hands, chucking a condiment container straight at the TV.

The 55 inch monitor was smashed and Ryan left the premises, but he had been seen on CCTV doing his damaging deed.

Ryan pleaded guilty to a destroying property charge at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard Ryan and some mates went into the pub’s beer garden and sat down with a schooner or two ready to watch the big game about 6.40pm on July 10.

But by 9.27pm after downing too many drinks the match became too trying for him, and he lost the plot, and his love of condiments.

He picked up a salt shaker from his table and hurled it straight at the large LG TV.

Ryan left the salty, screen-smashed scene, but was picked up on recorded security surveillance.

He was tracked to his parents’ Narre Warren home the next day and he admitted he was the salt shaker-thrower.

But he said it was “an accident” as he had flung it at his cousin who was nearby, and he hadn’t meant to hit the telly.

Ryan represented himself in court, saying he had been “silly”.

“I admit I threw it, I don’t know why I did it,” Ryan said.

“Probably the alcohol I consumed was a little too much.

“It was a silly thing to do.”

Ryan, who has only one prior, a driving offence from 2013, said he had now given up the goon and promised nothing like that would happen again.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she hoped his costly condiment chucking had been a lesson well learnt.

“It turns out it was a very expensive day out,” Ms Spencer said.

“Maybe this was a blessing in disguise for you to sort your life out.”

Ryan was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to repay $5032 to The Sporting Globe.
