A dog owner is relieved that his adventurous pup is home safe after he escaped from his backyard and ran onto the Monash Freeway into peak-hour traffic.

Commuters came to a halt around 8.45am on Wednesday after eight-year-old pup Konan was spotted running across multiple inbound lanes.

It’s believed the doberman dog was captured by two drivers in the emergency lane at Dandenong North before Victoria Police arrived on scene.

The uninjured pup was taken to Veterinary Referral Hospital where he was reunited with his owner Sam Sufra around 11am.

Mr Sufra told Leader that tradesman were at his home when Konan escaped.

“They left the gate open as they came in,” he said.

“And while I was talking to the tradesman, he must have slipped down the side of the house and took off.”

Mr Sufra said he was relieved Konan was safe after initially panicking when he realised his buddy was missing.

“We heard on Facebook that there was a dog on the freeway but we didn’t relate the two because it’s so far away from the house,’ he said.

“It has got to be at least three or four kilometres away.”

While Konan had a lucky run, Mr Sufra said he will be watching him very closely.

“We are so happy he is home,” Mr Sufra said.

“He is no worse for wear, he is fine as if nothing happened at all.”
