Dodgy Dandenong driver with 13 unlicensed priors back behind bars after breaching County Court bail

One of Dandenong’s worst drivers was given six months’ jail for more offending, but wasn’t happy with that sentence and appealed. But it seems he didn’t learn his lesson.

A dodgy driver dubbed one of Dandenong’s worst is back behind bars after he breached bail.

Brett Mehana, also known as Brett Andre Mei, had been sentenced in May to jail for a series of driving and breach crimes.

But he appealed the length of the term and was let out on bail to face another hearing in the County Court in late August.

The 32-year-old is now alleged to have gone on a rampage at his ex-partner’s house, kicking down her door in a fit of anger on August 3.

He was arrested the day after and will have to wait in custody for a community support report to be compiled before he is considered for release.

On Wednesday Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard police wanted him to remain behind bars because they say he has “a complete disregard” for rules, posed a danger to others, was likely to reoffend as well as not turn up to court.

On May 14 Mehana was sentenced to six months in jail for a series of driving, corrections orders and court order breach charges.

The court heard he had been caught behind the wheel while banned 13 times.

He hasn’t held a licence since he lost it for drink-driving in 2013, yet continued to drive for work.

On November 19 last year he was caught on Princes Highway in Dandenong driving unlicensed in an unregistered car bearing stolen number plates.

He had also been picked up in Ross St, Dandenong on November 1 driving unlicensed in an unregistered car.

And on August 31 last year he was nabbed in a car in Jeffrey St, Dandenong North bearing “novelty type” number plates, giving a name and address of a mate who lives in New Zealand to try and avoid arrest.

During the hearing he was described as one of Dandenong’s worst and most road rule ignorant drivers.

Mehana wasn’t happy with the six months’ jail he was given so appealed and was let out on County Court bail.

He breached that on August 3 when he went to his ex’s home and argued with her before allegedly banging on the door and ripping it off its hinges.

He told police he denied intentionally causing the damage, saying “he lost his footing and fell into the door”.

He also has a terrible criminal history, including for violent assaults, and has been in and out of jail over the past few years.

His defence lawyer said Mehana had a mental health condition he needed treatment for, which would not be able to be provided while in custody.

Magistrate Greg Connellan said he didn’t have confidence he could be monitored in the community without more support.

Mehana was remanded in custody until August 27 while an assessment could be organised.

His County Court appeal is listed to be heard later this month.
