Dodgem car ride destroyed by fire as police investigate

Investigators say a fire at the Rosebud Carnival in the early hours of Friday was deliberately lit. One of the most popular rides at the carnival, a peninsula summer institution for more than 60 years, was destroyed.

One of Mornington Peninsula’s most popular summer holiday attractions has been gutted by fire.

The dodgem cars at the Rosebud Carnival - described as “such an attraction” and a “rite of passage” by thrillseekers - were destroyed.

Police believe the ride was deliberately set alight in the early hours of January 24. It’s thought at least eight of the cars have been so badly burned they can’t be repaired.

An owner of Wittingslow Amusements, the organiser of the carnival, told the Leader they were upset that carnival goers couldn’t enjoy one of the most popular attractions.

“At any carnival the dodgems is one of the most popular rides and everyone really just enjoys it,” she said.

“If you’re a five year old you can go and enjoy them with your mum or dad, and it’s just disappointing people missed out on having that fun.”

She said the owners of the dodgem car ride were also concerned about the public not being able to enjoy the ride but wanted the carnival to open as usual.

“They were upset but definitely adopted the motto that the show must go on,” she said.

“They really just wanted to create a good atmosphere and family vibe so people could continue to have a good time.”

An insurance company will assess the damage, while police have launched an investigation in conjunction with the arson squad.

Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach said emergency services were called to the fire on Point Nepean Rd where the ride was engulfed in flames just after 1am.
