Australians urged to check smoke alarms

THE disabled Somerville man rescued from his burning house by a hero off-duty cop has been given a new wheelchair.

Greg Hehir, 60, thought he would die as he crawled towards the front door as fire engulfed his kitchen.

But fortunately a brave policeman driving past saw the smoke and busted down the front door and carried Mr Hehir to safety.

Mr Hehir lost everything in the June 29 fire, including his $500 wheelchair, but he counts himself lucky to still be alive.

As he starts to rebuild his life he said he was extremely grateful for the support of Mobility Aids Australia, who donated a new chair after hearing his tragic story.

The Springvale store also gave him a walker, a walking stick and a special cushion worth more than $1000.

Mr Hehir said while he is still struggling to make ends meet following the fire, he was very thankful for their support which was “definitely” making day-to-day life easier.

The cancer-survivor, whose right leg is paralysed, told the Leader “another minute (in his burning house) and I would have been gone because the flames were right behind me”.

Eugene Pizzolato, Independence Australia national sales manager, the parent company of Mobility Aids Australia, said for people living with a disability, mobility aids like wheelchairs and walking sticks were vital to help them perform everyday tasks.

“Our organisation is all about supporting people living with a disability or personal need, helping them to regain their independence,” he said.

Independence Australia supports thousands of customers throughout Australia by distributing personal health and wellbeing products, mobility aids and equipment.
