A state-of-the-art animal hospital featuring an MRI machine has opened its doors in Dandenong.
The $4.5 million Veterinary Referral Hospital by Greencross Vets includes 24-hour emergency care, as well as a new Tesla – MRI machine.
It also features separate wards for cats and dogs throughout, 15 walk-in runs for larger patients and dedicated ICU cat and dog wards.
Greencross Limited chief executive George Wahby said the hospital was led by one of the broadest teams of specialists and referral clinicians in Melbourne.
“Our emergency teams will continue to provide the highest standards of care 24 hours a day for inpatients, including post-operative and post-procedure patients, as well as managing our dedicated canine and feline intensive care units,” Mr Wahby said.
“A new 1.5 Tesla – MRI is the focal point of the comprehensive imaging services at VRH, it is the first unit of this specification in a veterinary clinic in Melbourne, it’s the same as you could encounter in human medical facilities.”
Veterinarian Rob Turner said the technology allowed serious diseases or infections to be detcected quicker.
“We mostly use the machine to image the brain and the spine. We look for brain cancers, infections and we can also spot strokes that dogs get,” Mr Turner said.
He said different to humans, vets needed to give them general anaesthetic.
An MRI study is often quite long compared to performing X-rays or CT scans – it can take 40 minutes to about an hour.
Dr Yenny Indrawirawan said the hospital was supported by a highly trained, dedicated emergency and critical care team of clinicians and nurses.
