A gun-wielding crook whacked a man with a handgun during a terrifying attempted carjacking at a Frankston petrol station.

Frankston South man Jason, who did not wish to use his surname, was walking to his car at the Caltex service station on Nepean Highway about 9.40pm last night when he was approached by the thug, who was armed with a handgun.

Jason said he felt like he was in “something out of a Hollywood movie” when his attacker struck him over the head with the firearm in the attempted carjacking.

He said he noticed a strange man lurking nearby as he walked back to his car after buying coffee and cigarettes.

“He was standing there … I got this funny feeling something wasn’t right and I thought (to myself) I’ll just watch him,” Jason said.

“As soon as I tried to get into the car he pointed his gun at me and said ‘give me your f*cking keys c***’.”

When he refused to hand his keys over, he was bashed over the head with the weapon and had his cigarettes stolen.

The attacker then jumped into a waiting Commodore that was driven south along Nepean Highway.

Jason sustained minor scratches but said he did not regret putting up a fight.

“I wasn’t going to let him have my things. I’ve worked hard for my things,” he said.

“He was going to have to shoot me if he wanted to take my car.”

Senior Constable Jason Hamilton-Smith said the attacker could have been waiting at the petrol station for an extended amount of time before unleashing his assault.

“It is a relatively isolated area so it may have been a case (where) they were waiting for someone to target,” he said.

CCTV images released by police show the scuffle unfold.

The brown or maroon VT Commodore with no registration plates was last seen driving south on Nepean Highway.

The victim was injured during the attack but did not receive treatment.
