A Cranbourne West woman believed to have stabbed her own mother in a horrifying home attack has been charged with attempted murder.

Dandenong family violence unit detectives charged the 22-year-old on Thursday following reports she a ttacked her 60-year-old mother before their Scarborough Ave home caught fire about 8.30am on September 2.

The shock incident left the alleged attacker fighting for life with critical upper body injuries but The Alfred hospital downgraded her status to stable this week.

“The 22-year-old woman remains in hospital and has also been charged with criminal damage by fire, intentionally cause serious injury and injury, assault with a weapon and reckless conduct endangering life,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman told the Leader.

“A 60-year-old woman was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.”

Nearby neighbours expressed their disbelief last week after witnessing smoke and flames coming from the “usually quiet” property.

They said the two women were mother and daughter.

“There’s no commotion, it’s a very quiet street … I’ve been here for 19 years and nothing has happened … it’s so terrible,” neighbour Lara Spottiswood told the Leader.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the two women involved were known to each other.

The 22-year-old is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court by video link on November 30.
