A mother and daughter are believed to be at the centre of a suspected stabbing attack at Cranbourne West.

It comes after a 60-year-old woman was set upon by a 22-year-old woman at a Scarborough Ave house before the property was gutted by flames just after 8.30am on Wednesday.

Neighbours told the Leader a person was found at the rear of the house with stab wounds.

The Leader understands the two women involved in the horrific incident are mother and daughter.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman told the Leader the 22-year-old was flown to The Alfred hospital with critical upper body injuries.

A spokeswoman at The Alfred said she remained in a critical condition as of Thursday morning but was stable.

The 60-year-old woman is being treated for upper body injuries at The Royal Melbourne Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Shocked Scarborough Ave residents described the horrific incident which destroyed the “usually quiet” house.

“There’s no commotion, it’s a very quiet street … I’ve been here for 19 years and nothing has happened … it’s so terrible,” neighbour Lara Spottiswood told the Leader.

Another neighbour, Travis Phillips, told the Leader the residents had only lived in the house for less than 12 months.

“I work on the skyrail and had just got home from night shift and saw the smoke,” he said.

“It’s normally a very quiet house.”

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman told the Leader a number of triple-0 calls were made about 8:30am on Wednesday.

“FRV crews arrived on scene within six minutes to find a house fully involved in the fire,” she said.

“Two FRV appliances and one command unit attended the scene and were supported by a number of Country Fire Authority crews.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the two women were known to each other.

“Investigators have been told a 60-year-old woman sustained non-life threatening injuries after being assaulted by a 22-year-old woman at the property on Scarborough Ave just after 8.30am,” she said.

“The 22-year-old was flown to hospital with serious injuries and will be assessed.

“The parties are known to each other and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.”
