A Cranbourne North truck driver held a knife to his wife’s throat and threatened to kill her after she told her friends about his violent behaviour.

The man pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on January 18 to unlawful assault, making threats to kill and carrying a prohibited weapon.

The court heard the man began drinking in his garden shed about 12pm on January 2 instead of taking his kids on a bike ride.

This caused an argument between the man and his wife where the accused raised his fist at the woman.

The woman screamed “please don’t hurt me” and fled the house with her children.

The woman told her friends about the incident which prompted them to attend the family home and speak to the man to try and calm him down.

The friends left the home and the woman returned with her children.

The couple agreed to sleep in separate rooms but at midnight, the man went to the woman’s room and said “if you say our personal issues to our friends, I will kill you and anyone who comes over.”

The next day, the man continued to drink in the garden shed before he took a 23cm flick knife from the kitchen.

He held it about 30cm from the woman’s throat and said “this is what happens if you say anything to anybody”.

The victim feared for her life and ran outside.

When the man was arrested, he said to police “when I get released I will be going back to be violent (sic) to my wife as she shouldn’t have called police”.

During a police interview, the man said “don’t take it seriously, I tell my wife I’ll kill her 365 times a year”.

The man’s lawyer Farah Banihali said there were “clear issues” with his triggers in relation to his behaviour.

Prosecution said the offending was “extremely serious” and the woman was entitled to feel safe in her own home.

“It’s completely unacceptable that she is threatened with a knife being held to her throat,” they said.

The man will return to court on Friday.
