Mornington is now a major hot spot for coronavirus with 30 active cases.

Data released on Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Services revealed postcode 3031 had the most active cases on the Mornington Peninsula.

The cluster is believed to be linked to an outbreak at Village Glen Aged Care, Nepean Highway, Mornington

The centre has recorded 37 cases since the outbreak began on August 5.

However the most recent testing has not found any new infections and some staff that had been isolating returned to work this week.

Neighbouring Mt Martha had the second highest number of active cases with 9 and postcode 3912, which includes Somerville and Pearcedale, had 4.

It is not clear how these infections were transmitted.

There were two infections in Portsea and postcode 3915 (Hastings and Tuerong) and postcode 3936 (Arthurs Seat, Dromana and Safety Beach).

Single active cases were recorded in Baxter, Tyabb, Bittern, Capel Sound and postcode 3941, which covers Rye, St Andrews and Tootgarook.

Meanwhile, the region’s largest medical health centre – Frankston Hospital – has more than 600 staff in isolation after an outbreak that began on August 16.

A number of wards, including the Acute Medical Surgical Unit, Surgical Short Stay Unit and 5GN had temporarily ceased admissions as a precautionary measure.

The hospital’s cardiology, mental health, ICU, maternity and acute medical surgical wards continue to accept admissions.

Chief Executive Felicity Topp said they were doing “all we can” to stop further spread.

“The safety and wellbeing of our staff, our patients and our community is our utmost priority,” she said.

“As such, we are casting a very wide net on our contact tracing process resulting in the furloughing of 618 staff across the service.”
