COVID fines: Golfers busted playing sneaky round at Mornington Peninsula course

Golf courses may be closed across the Mornington Peninsula but that hasn’t stopped two players from seeking some sneaky tee time. They are among the latest people to be busted breaking the rules.

A pair of golfers have been fined for playing a sneaky round at a Mornington Peninsula golf course.

The men were busted after climbing the fence to gain entry to the closed course.

There are at least 17 golf courses in the region.

Police did not reveal which course was involved.

Another man was fined on Sunday under Stage 4 restrictions after being stopped at a checkpoint at Little River.

He told police he was headed to his holiday house in Rye, about 140km away.

Both fines were among a total of 216 fines issued to people to individuals for breaching the Chief Health Officer directions, including 27 for failing to wear a face covering when leaving home for one of the four approved reasons and 89 for curfew breaches

Police have conducted 3,294 spot checks on people at homes, businesses and public places across the state (total of 288,021 spot checks conducted since 21 March).

Among the spot checks has been Mount Martha Village, where coffee drinkers have been seen sitting and chatting near cafes.

A sign was recently attached to a bench outside Via Battiste, warning customers not to sit down while waiting for their take away.

“Please do not sit here while waiting for your coffee and meals,” it states.

“Police are on the prowl and have fined people this week.”
