Australia's domestic violence crisis

A young mum has shared how her life derailed following domestic violence as her ex-partner pleaded guilty to shattering her jaw.

Colin Thomas Maddocks, 39, faced the County Court on Tuesday pleading guilty to offences including recklessly causing serious injury and criminal damage.

He punched his former partner in the face as she tried to leave a Hampton Park home with her young daughter in July of 2019, the court head.

The woman, who was 16 years his junior, fell to the ground, suffering two fractures to her jaw.

The injury went untreated for a few days, when Maddocks decided to call an ambulance.

Months later, on October 6, he broke bail conditions requiring him to live in Wyndham Vale by attending her home and damaging property after an argument.

The 21-year-old mother fled into the backyard “terrified”.

He would later deny hitting her, telling police he “didn’t do s … to her”, and claiming the injury was a result of tripping off a concrete ledge.

“She’s the aggressor, she was off her face,” he told police. “She started punching holes in the door.”

The woman was in court as the charges were put to Maddocks, remaining silent as he pleaded guilty to the offending.

In a victim impact statement, the former personal trainer said the Maddocks’ violence had “taken away” her enjoyment of life.

“I’ve lost everything dear to me,” she said.

“I was always bubbly, outgoing and wanting to do things.

“Now I don’t answer my phone and feel anxious outside of the house.

“This has massively affected my daughter‘s life, even now she has trouble interacting with males.”

The woman said her jaw was “no longer reliant” and that she‘d suffered pain, infections and repeat surgeries over the past three years.

The court heard she had undergone three surgeries to repair her jaw and it still had not healed properly.

Arguing for a “considerable” term of imprisonment, prosecutor Natalie Burnett said the offending was a serious example of interpersonal violence.

“This has had significant physical and psychological effects on the victim to this day,” she said.

Judge Wendy Wilmoth remanded Maddocks into custody ahead of a sentencing hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
