More childcare centres have been listed as exposure sites in Casey, while a number of local schools have recorded positive Covid cases.

Astra Early Learning in Narre Warren South has been listed as a Tier 1 site after a positive case was present there on Tuesday, while Goodstart Early Learning in Lynbrook has been listed as a Tier 2 site after a case attended there on Monday.

There are nine childcare centres that are listed as Tier 1 exposure sites in Casey and Greater Dandenong – eight of which are Tier 1.

A number of local schools have also confirmed that they have positive cases.

Casey Fields Primary School abruptly shut its doors yesterday following reports that a positive case had been there – however it has yet to be listed as an exposure site by the Department of Health.

St Francis Xavier College in Berwick has also warned parents that a family member of a student has tested positive, while Oakleigh Secondary College announced it would be operating remotely after a student who attended the GAT on Tuesday subsequently tested positive.

There has also been nine cases linked to Dandenong police station.

Earlier in the week a man in his 50s from Casey died and a Clyde North childcare centre was listed as a Tier 1 exposure site.

In the most recent reporting period Casey recorded 120 new cases and Dandenong recorded 69.

Speaking on Wednesday, Health Minister Martin Foley confirmed the Casey’s man death.

Late on Wednesday night the Clyde North YMCA Early Learning Centre on Ayara St was listed as a Tier 1 site, after a positive case was present there on September 27 from 8-11am.

Earlier Wednesday morning the Cranbourne Daycare and Kindergarten Centre in Clyde was listed as a Tier 1 exposure site, after a positive case was present there on Saturday from 6am – 2pm.

Earlier this week Covid-19 commander Jeroen Weimar said a quarter of cases statewide existed in the east and south east, and singled out Pakenham, Dandenong and Noble Park as suburbs where the virus was spreading.

On Tuesday, Deputy secretary of Covid response, Kate Matson, said 21 per of Tuesday’s cases were in the south eastern suburbs, with 370 new infections, including 131 in Casey.

“This rate has tripled and is showing the largest growth in Melbourne,” she said.

“Covid is around everywhere in metropolitan Melbourne; please do act as if it’s at the supermarket; when you go keep your mask on and practise your Covid-safe behaviours.”

Attention will turn to Casey Hospital in Berwick and Dandenong Hospital and their respective ICU’s capacities, with the system expected to become strained.
