Up to a dozen big brands will soon open on Melbourne’s eastern fringe following the redevelopment of an ugly, vacant block of land.

The Chirnside Lifestyle Centre is fully leased and expected to be ready for trade in November.

The site at 266-268 Maroondah Highway will be home to popular “every day retailers” Baby Bunting, Chemist Warehouse, Harris Scarfe, Fantastic Furniture, Carpet Call, Ashley Furniture, Bargain Barn, Early Settler and fast food giants Taco Bell and Subway.

McDonalds and KFC have also taken spots on the 3.91ha site formerly owned by Kaufland before the German supermarket giant scrapped its plans to open in Australia.

The land was one of nine properties across the country listed for sale in 2020 through industrial real estate agent Colliers International, and was sold in December to Troon Group and MaxCap Group.

Troon Group managing director Tom McInerney said the redeveloped site had proven so popular with big brands it was fully leased a year ahead of schedule.

“We have been overwhelmed by the retailer response to Chirnside Lifestyle Centre,” Mr McInerney said.

“We are excited to provide the community with the retail amenity they have been

asking for.”

The Lifestyle Centre was also expected to generate a lot of excitement among investors after recently being put on the market.

It was expected to attract offers in the mid $40 million range.

The sale is being handled by Colliers International in conjunction with Stonebridge Property Group.

Colliers’ Tim McIntosh said the centre would bring much needed new retailers to the area and was in a prime spot passed by 38,000 cars daily.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the development especially now that people can see the brand names starting to go up,” he said.

The development follows the recent sale of three ex-Kaufland sites in Queensland by developer Gordoncorp.

Included in the Queensland sales was the recently developed Burleigh Home & Life

large format retail centre, selling for $72.5 million to a local private investor.

An expressions of interest campaign for Chirnside Lifestyle Centre will run until October 20.
