Give way signs not working at Nepean Highway, Charman Road crossing

Shocking footage shows pedestrians almost mowed down at a dangerous Cheltenham crossing. WATCH THE VIDEO

Faulty pedestrian crossing putting lives at risk

Shocking footage has been released showing the moment two women are nearly struck by cars at a pedestrian crossing in Melbourne’s south.

The video, posted by Liberal Democrat David Limbrick, shows the women attempting to cross Nepean Highway at Charman Road in Cheltenham.

The pair were forced to leap out of the way to avoid a car turning left from Charman Road into the busy four lane highway.

Disturbingly, the incident was filmed just days after Tranpsort Minister Ben Carroll said the crossing had recently been inspected by the Department of Tranpsort and declared to be operating “satisfactorily”.

The inspection followed an August 19 request from Mr Limbrick to investigate after complaints that flashing ‘give way to pedestrian’ signs at the crossing weren’t working.

Mr Limbrick said staff from his office, which is near the dangerous crossing, visited the site on Friday morning to check on the lights after being told on Wednesday that the give way alerts were “clearly visible” to turning traffic.

“I was mortified when I saw the video they came back with,” he said.

“Locals tell me there are near misses there every day, but to see what a close call those two pedestrians had was confronting.”

The video also showed the give way signs weren’t working.

Mr Limbrick first raised concerns about the crossing earlier this year after residents from a nearby retirement village complained about the “inadequate” amount of time given to cross the wide intersection.

“The Minister (Ben Carroll) acted and had the time extended, which while still a little tight, was appreciated.”

On August 19 Mr Limbrick raised the crossing again during Question Time in parliament.

“It seems that the flashing give-way-to-pedestrians signs at the traffic lights on the outbound side of Nepean Highway are either inoperable or not clearly visible,” he said.

“There is also an issue with cars turning into the service lane too quickly.”

Mr Carroll responded on September 13 saying the Department of Transport had inspected the intersection of Nepean Highway and Charman Road on August 26.

“Dot advised that the “Give Way To Pedestrians” flashing signs were clearly visible to turning traffic and operating satisfactorily at the time of the inspection.”

Mr Carroll said a safety review would be done to determine if vehicles were turning too quickly into the intersection from Charman Road.

“That review needs to be done urgently,” Mr Limbrick said.
