A FRANKSTON charity spending thousands on repairs and rego for people forced to live in their cars has warned the city’s homeless crisis is worsening.

A WELL-LOVED Frankston charity has been spending thousands of dollars on repairs and registration for people forced to live in their cars.

The revelation comes as Community Support Frankston earlier this month celebrated half-a-century helping vulnerable people in the city.

Manager Steve Phillips said demand for the organisation’s services were the highest they had ever been, with inquiries more than doubling from 11,174 in 2016 to 24,490 in 2017.

He said last financial year the charity put $16,000 into the cost of car registration, licences and car repairs, partly due to the amount of people in the area who had been forced to live in their vehicle due to the dire lack of crisis accommodation.

It has handed out more than $3.75 million in aid in the last 10 years.

Mayor Colin Hampton said Community Support Frankston played a key role in the municipality.

“Community Support Frankston was one of the first community services to be established in our city — it provides vital information, advice and skills which help people be more self-sufficient,” he said.

“It is also a place where people who have a strong sense of social responsibility can become involved — and help to address community issues and problems.

“Community Support Frankston goes a long way to help change the life circumstances of some of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged community members.”

Group chair Sue Smith acknowledged all the volunteers, including Peter Lewis, a volunteer who’s been there for the full 50 years and is still dedicating half a day to community worker assessments and the tax help program.
