Casey and Cardinia have recorded the biggest spike in Covid cases since the beginning of the state’s most recent outbreak.
The increase comes as the emergency departments at two of the state’s biggest public hospitals – Dandenong and Casey – were listed as Tier 1 exposure sites overnight, in addition to major shopping centres in the areas.
In updated health department data Casey recorded 26 new cases overnight, bringing the total number of active cases in the municipality to 142.
Casey Hospital was listed as Tier 1 after a case was present there on Monday, while Liquor Land in Casey Central was listed as Tier 2 on Monday after a positive case attended the store on three consecutive days last week.
Of the 26 new cases, 10 of those were in Cranbourne, a suburb that bears the bulk of Casey’s active cases with 49.
Berwick, Narre Warren and Hampton Park all recorded two new cases overnight.
Cases in Cardinia increased by nearly a third overnight, with 14 new cases bringing the total number of active cases in the area to 61.
The Coles on Pakenham’s Main St remains the most significant exposure site in the area.
It was listed as a Tier 2 exposure site on Monday, after a positive case visited the shopping centre four days in a row last week.
More than two-thirds of Cardinia’s cases are in Pakenham, which recorded 12 of the area’s 14 new cases.
Of Cardinia’s 61 cases, 42 are in Pakenham.
