Brute Brett Hauschild broke into ex’s house, threatened her with blowtorch as kid hid in bathroom

A Hastings’ man’s life of violence — he has 109 prior convictions spanning two decades — continued when he threatened his ex with a blowtorch in her own house as a scared child ran and hid in her bathroom.

Brett Hauschild has been jailed for a blowtorch attack on his ex-girlfriend.
Brett Hauschild has been jailed for a blowtorch attack on his ex-girlfriend.

A jilted thug who broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and threatened her with a blowtorch while a petrified child was in the house has been jailed.

In November last year Brett Hauschild climbed onto the woman’s roof before busting through a bedroom window as she took a bath.

Her housemate’s 12-year-old daughter saw him walking around the property with the culinary blowtorch — used for heating crème brulees — demanding to know where his ex was.

Scared and frightened, the young girl grabbed a knife, ran and hid in the ensuite bathroom in her bedroom.

By now the woman had heard Hauschild’s yelling, but she refused to get out of the bathroom because of his aggressive state.

He then kicked holes through the door and pointed the blowtorch at her before leaving with a mate in a car, bleeding from a cut to his head he had sustained when climbing through the broken window.

The woman had ended the 11-month relationship two days beforehand because she was frightened of his behaviour, especially when he was on drugs.

Police tried to arrest Hauschild at his Hastings home, but he wasn’t there.

They then found him hiding in a cupboard in a bedroom at his sister’s house a few days later.

Hauschild pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and damage property charges at the County Court on September 11.

The court heard the 36-year-old has a jam-packed rap sheet full of violence, theft and burglary related crimes and was also on a community corrections order at the time.

Judge Rachelle Lewitan said the “serious and disturbing” offending was terrifying for both victims.

“(You were in) a possessive, violent rage,” Judge Lewitan said.

“Such a response (to a relationship breakdown) is utterly unacceptable.”

She accepted the father of three was remorseful and he deserved some credit by pleading guilty and sparing the ordeal of the witness having to give evidence.

But she said his priors — he has 109 convictions and has had 18 court appearances since 2001 — showed there was a need for the protection of the community.

Hauschild was jailed for 21 months, minus 291 days he has already served on remand.

He will also have to do a two-year community corrections order, with drug treatment, when he is released next year.
