Brick Lane Brewing Company set to launch first beers

THREE mates are about to launch a range of fresh frothies at their new Dandenong South craft brewery. Here’s how they plan to take on the big-name brews.

What does 220-year-old beer taste like?

A BUNCH of mates are about to take on the big name brews with fresh frothies made using the latest technology.

Brick Lane Brewing Company will officially launch its first five beers in September, with a preview open day coming up.

Co-founder and managing director Paul Bowker said production at the bespoke brewery in Dandenong South began last week.

“We’ve got a lager, a pale and a red ale in production and are working on another two beers,” Mr Bowker said.

The brewery has been purpose-built from scratch and has the capacity to produce 10 million litres of beer annually.

“We can produce enough to challenge some of the big names, but the real beauty of our set up is that we can also do small batches,” Mr Browker said.

“That allows us to do limited editions for special beers and ensure that all our beers are as fresh as possible.”

He said while most beer had a 12 month shelf life, the fresher the brew the better it tasted.

“Unless it’s a brew designed to be aged, you really want to be drinking it as close as possible to its creation date,” he said.

Mr Browker said the company spend a lot of time working with German brewery systems BrauKon on designing the brewery and even the first lager.

“BrauKon uses cutting edge technology such as cross flow filters which have been used in the wine industry for a while but not for brewing.

“That sort of tech is helping to making us efficient and environmentally sustainable.”

Brick Lane was started by small group of mates which quickly grew to a team of 25.

“There were a few of us with a passion for beer who wanted to start our own brewery,” Mr Browker said.

“As we started talking to other like minded mates about the project the group of people interested in being involved got bigger.”

Mr Browker and head brewer John Seltin (Hawkers Beer, Reservoir) were among a handful of group members who left their “day jobs” to focus on the project.

“We were lucky to have John on board early on,” Mr Browker said.

“He has been involved in the research and design of the brewery which has been really important.”

Brick Lane is holding a community open day on August 12 from 11am-4pm at Jayco Drive, Dandenong South.

There’ll be fresh beer on tap, brewery walk-throughs, a sausage sizzle and kids activities.
