A Dandenong South bread supplier that made food in unhygienic conditions has been fined for the second time in a year.

City of Greater Dandenong investigations found Bread Choice Pty Ltd, trading as Breadlicious, to be processing unsafe food in a filthy factory without proper handwashing sites.

Their November court appearance came just one year after they were hauled before a magistrate for dirty, unsafe practices at the Stephen Rd operation.

The company has been slapped with a $10,000 fine this time and is still in business.

Staff at the food site, which makes food products to sell at the Box Hill Breadlicious store, were not fully trained in food safety and hygiene.

And the grotty factory, which makes egg tarts, pork floss rolls, chilli chicken rolls and other food containing homemade mayonnaise, drew the ire of council inspectors in March 2018 for failing to comply with Food Act requirements.

The offences included a failure to take all practicable measures to process only safe and suitable food, and failing to maintain easily accessible handwashing facilities.

Other breaches included a failure to maintain food premises to a standard of cleanliness where there was no accumulation of garbage.

It also failed to maintain dirt, grease or other visible matter to an acceptable level.

Bread Choice Pty Ltd was unable to ensure staff had the food safety and hygiene skills to undertake or supervise food-handling operations.

The deadly dangers of a packed lunch

The latest matter was resolved in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last November when Bread Choice Pty Ltd was convicted and fined. It was also ordered to pay $4000 in court costs.

Greater Dandenong Council declined to comment.

Bread Choice Pty Ltd had also fronted court in November 2017 after council officers found food being left in dirty containers, mould on walls, and holes in the factory ceiling allowing pests to get inside.

The food supplier also made food containing homemade mayonnaise.

Officers also found ready-to-eat food containing raw egg was being stored at room temperature with no use-by date.

The company avoided a conviction then, but was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $5000 to charity.

According to the health.vic website, meat, eggs and poultry are “high-risk” foods which can cause death if not handled or prepared properly.

Bread Choice Pty Ltd declined to comment when contacted by Leader.
