Bike rider chased by peninsula police at speeds of over 175km/h admits to ‘couple of cones’

A unlicensed hoon biker who led police on a high-speed chase through the Mornington Peninsula before ramming his bike into a cop car was asked to do a drug test. His reply? “I’d rather not.” Here’s why.

A doped-up biker led police on a wild Peninsula pursuit at speeds of over 175km/h and then rammed his ride into a cop car.

Michael Colman admitted “having a couple of cones” before getting on his bike and racing along dark roads at well over double the speed limit.

He had been chased after a passing patrol saw the unlicensed rider — who has never held a bike licence — leaving a Peninsula Link servo at high speed.

When he was caught he refused to take an oral fluid test, saying “I’d rather not, I’ve had a couple of cones tonight” before officers found 4g of cannabis in his pocket.

Colman pleaded guilty to a dozen driving, drug and breach charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Colman was seen leaving the Baxter servo about 11.15pm on February 14, 2017. At first police couldn’t keep up with him — clocking the reckless rider at over 175km/h in a 70km/h zone — before he was stopped at a roundabout.

He collided at low speed into the now-parked cop car and tried to ride off, but was pushed from his bike by officers and apprehended.

Four months later he was caught driving a car in Main St, Moorooduc while disqualified, after losing his licence for 12 months for drug driving in January of that year.

The Mornington man stayed off the police radar for two years before he came to their attention on June 8 this year, when he was once again caught driving while unlicensed and with fake plates on Mornington-Tyabb Rd in Mornington.

The car’s rego had expired and he once more refused to give a saliva sample to test for drugs, admitting he knew he shouldn’t have been driving.

He had also breached two community corrections orders, one imposed for trafficking ice.

His defence lawyer said Colman had led police on the chase because he had been the victim of road rage earlier in the day and believed the offenders were still after him.

He said while he had a history of ice use he was now clean of meth, but had continued to use marijuana to deal with a series of family grief issues.

Magistrate Dominic Lennon said it was “an egregious example of dangerous driving” and adjourned the case for sentencing on October 16.
