A Mornington Peninsula family has been robbed of a precious summer pastime after fire ripped through their Rosebud beach box on Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to a blaze at a beach box on Point Nepean Rd boat sheds about 3.15am.
The crews put out the blaze, but not before it had damaged neighbouring boat sheds.
No one was injured.
The Leader understands the beach box that bore the brunt of the blaze was not insured and its owners are now $80,000 out of pocket.
The family, who did not want to be identified, said squatters had been a problem at the boat shed and they had reported the issue to police.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Mornington Peninsula Beach Box Association president Mark Davis said homeless people often sought shelter in the Rosebud boat sheds.
“The beach boxes along that stretch of coast are hidden from public view by trees and are often used by the homeless,” Mr Davis said.
“It’s become even more of an issue during the coronavirus pandemic.”
He said thefts from beach boxes was also a problem as desperate people looked for items they could “quickly convert to cash”.
