After recording close to 200 coronavirus cases since March, the Mornington Peninsula is now one of ten Melbourne municipalities in the race to be virus free.

According to the latest Department of Health data, the region’s tally dropped by six from 16 active cases to 10, as of Wednesday, September 9.

The dip put the peninsula in the top ten municipalities across Melbourne with 10 or less infections.

Leading the charge to eradicate COVID-19 are the LGAs of Maroondah and Knox in Melbourne’s east and Nillumbik in the city’s northeast – all with just six active cases.

Nearby neighbours Knox also dropped a case overnight to join Maroondah on six active cases.

Nillumbik has remained on six active cases since Monday, September 7, after its tally was as low as three cases on Friday, September 4.

A number of other municipalities in Melbourne’s east and southeast have 10 or less active cases and made further progress overnight.

Banyule (8, four less cases) has rocketed into contention, while Manningham’s total also decreased (7, one less case).

Yarra Ranges remained steady on nine cases, while Whitehorse (9, one new case) and Boroondara (10, one new cases) added to their totals.

Stonnington also suffered a setback after entering single figures for the first time on Tuesday, September 8, with its active cases total increasing by two to 11.

Wyndham has regained the title of Melbourne’s virus hotspot from nearby neighbours Brimbank, with its total up to 209 active cases.

It gained six new cases overnight, while Brimbank remained steady on 205 cases.

The State Government has imposed Stage 4 restrictions on the Mornington Peninsula and the rest of metropolitan Melbourne until at least September 28, with minor changes to be introduced on September 13.

Under the current restrictions, residents can only travel within a 5km radius of their home address.

Face masks remain mandatory for all Victorians outside of the home.
