Ali Nazari: Doveton brute bashed 13 victims in brazen public attacks

It seemed no one was safe from a maniacal 34-year-old Doveton thug as he lay into housemates, cops, security guards and even shopkeepers.

A thug punched, bit and headbutted 13 different people including shopkeepers, police, security guards and housemates in a series of random public attacks, a court has heard.

Ali Nazari went on several strange rampages hitting out at retail staff, emergency workers and passers-by in a pattern of behaviour described by his lawyer as bizarre.

The 34-year-old Doveton man pleaded guilty to an array of assault-related charges at the online Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard in December last year he lost the plot after a dispute over the price of a can of energy drink at a Dandenong deli.

Nazari lashed out, throwing bottles and cans at staff until the manager asked him to leave.

As he was walking out Nazari continued to try and bash the man until police came and arrested him.

He was unfit for interview, rambling incoherently, highly agitated and very aggressive.

In the same month he went ballistic at a Noble Park housemate with a chair leg because his music was too loud.

Police were called and Nazari was arrested at the home.

In January last year he assaulted and threatened to kill two security guards at Dandenong Plaza after they were called to remove him for confronting bank staff and charity workers.

He punched, headbutted and bit the guards, hit out at bystanders who tried to intervene and attacked police when they came to arrest him.

When in custody he stripped naked, threw water over an officer and repeatedly kicked cell doors.

In total there were 13 victims that had either been assaulted or threatened during the series of violent incidents, the court heard.

His defence lawyer told the court Nazari’s “pattern of bizarre behaviours” was due to his ongoing mental health struggles.

He said his client lost his tiling business, and combined with the death of his child and the loneliness he experienced due to his family still being in Afghanistan, things went awry.

He said he conceded a prison term was “squarely on the table” but asked it not be a “crushing sentence”.

Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said she would have Nazari assessed for a community corrections order but that did not mean he would be leaving custody any time soon.

“His behaviour must have been frightening, if not terrifying, for members of the public,” Ms Dootjes said.

“There were acts of violence in very public places.

“My concern is around the risk to the community once he is released if he is not engaging with mental health practitioners.”

Nazari was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on April 12.
