A weekend-only druggie, a frequent flyer crim caught again, a violent partner cases this week

A “weekend-only” drug-driver, a “frequent flyer” court case criminal nabbed again, and a violent partner upset over car keys were some of the cases heard at Dandenong this week.

A man who punched his wife in front of their young child has told a court he is sorry and it won’t happen again.

Only on weekends, officer

A drug-driver who failed an oral fluid test told police she only did ice on weekends, and as this was midweek, she should be okay. But a magistrate didn’t agree and gave her six months off the road. The 31-year-old woman was pulled over by police in Springvale about 2am on June 26 this year. She passed a booze breath test, but failed a drug mouth scrape. When asked if she had taken drugs, she said “Yes, I had taken ice a few days ago”. She said she only did drugs on the weekends, so it was okay. In court she reiterated her stance saying her drug-taking “was just a weekend thing”. The magistrate told her days of the week don’t matter, and that if she drives on drugs she is a risk on the road to other motorists. The woman, who has no priors, was convicted and fined $400 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Puncher sorry over car key fight

A man who punched his wife three times in front of their young child in a fight over car keys has told a court he is sorry and it won’t happen again. The man, a disability support worker, bashed his wife in their Dandenong home on September 30 this year. They had argued and he took her car keys and drove off, before coming back 30 minutes later. He grabbed her by her hair and punched her three times to the face before throwing the car keys on the floor. Police were called and arrested him. The woman declined an ambulance and was not seriously hurt. He represented himself in court, saying he had no prior history and was extremely remorseful about the “heat of the moment” unlawful assault, which he said he “feels really bad” about. The magistrate said if he had any history it would be automatic jail, but instead sent him for a corrections assessment with behaviour and anger management program conditions.

Frequent flyer brought to ground

A career criminal with a comprehensive rap sheet, described by a magistrate as a “frequent flyer to the court”, has been caught breaking the law again. The man was this time nabbed driving while suspended in an unregistered car in Dandenong on July 15 this year. He had lost his licence for racking up too many demerit points, and had been banned for three months in June. He told officers he had to drive because he was on his way to a community corrections order appointment, but he didn’t know his ride was out of rego. The disability pensioner now has his licence back. The magistrate said in his younger days the man was a frequent flyer to the court system, but he seemed to have settled down considerably over the past few years. But she said if he comes back again for a similar offence he will be given some time in jail to think about it. He was convicted and fined $500, with no licence loss imposed.
