Race-goers had a colourful day at the Penshurst Cup on Saturday.
Punters were pelted by wind and rain in the morning but the weather cleared in the afternoon, allowing the day’s activities and races to go ahead.
Brendan Kelly, Secretary of the Penshurst and District Racing club, said the bad weather in the morning impacted crowd numbers but the weather clearing allowed people to enjoy the afternoon.
“Our club is around 150 years old so it’s significant for our community to keep having these events and we really enjoy putting it on,” he said.
Ruby Cush from south-west Victoria described the day as “amazing”.
“Everyone’s been super friendly and super excited to actually have a day out finally, and it’s been a real positive experience,” she said.
“I think everyone’s pretty desperate for a social time after COVID and the last few events that have been planned have been cancelled.
“Everyone has adjusted to different footwear and they’re still keen to have a good day out and enjoy the social time.”
Other country cups have not been so lucky with the inclement weather, with Mortlake and Dunkeld in the south-west forced to abandon their days.
