A “stupid” hoon who filmed himself doing more than 220km/h on EastLink in a stolen car has been threatened with years behind bars if he’s dumb enough to do it again.
Zachary White, 25, of Yarra Glen, faced the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 16, where he pleaded guilty to a raft of charges including multiple car thefts, driving while disqualified, speeding and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.
On March 30 the lead foot thrill seeker filmed himself on his phone flying along EastLink in Wantirna South at 228km/h — more than double the 100km/h speed limit — in a stolen Skoda station wagon, according to court documents.
The video was later found by police after they arrested White in Lilydale on April 1 over a string of car thefts, theft from cars, petrol drive offs across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
White’s lawyer told the court her client previously struggled with drug addiction but was ready to get clean.
Magistrate Tim Walsh said White was lucky he hadn’t killed someone on EastLink and sentenced him to 106 days’ jail — equal to time served — but with a stern warning.
“The hairs on the back of my neck went up when I read about the 200km/h, it’s just stupid,” Mr Walsh said.
“If you ploughed into another car with a family in it you’d be in your 60s when you got out of jail.
“We’re not going to be talking about months (in jail) in future, we’re going to be talking about years (if you reoffend).”
Mr Walsh fined White $300, cancelled his licence and disqualified him from driving for four years.
