Drug debt collector Tansu Biyik tells Broadmeadows court he’s done with crime

A standover man who threatened victims over unpaid drug debts has back-chatted a magistrate, telling her to stop focusing on his character flaws.

Tansu Biyik, 37, of Meadow Heights faced the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a deferral of sentence after he pleaded guilty to a raft of charges including car theft, theft and burglary.

Leading Senior Constable Jasmine Hill told the court Biyik broke into a man’s Meadow Heights home in January and stole laptops, televisions and power tools in reprisal for an unpaid $3000 drug debt.

He also threatened to headbutt another victim in the face if they didn’t hand over cash he said was owed to him, and he stole hundreds of dollars worth of petrol while swanning around Melbourne’s northern suburbs driving stolen cars, she told the court.

Leading Sen-Constable Hill told the court Biyik was a “menace to the public” and had long criminal history of similar priors.

Biyik’s lawyer told the court her client, who had been in custody since his arrest at home on January 16, had a troubled upbringing and would stay at a drug rehab if released.

Magistrate Abigail Burchill said Biyik had been given plenty of chances by the court to get clean but he chose to reoffend.

But Biyik piped up from the dock, telling Ms Burchill she was “explaining the negatives” and was ready to get clean.

“I’m sick of going backwards,” he told the court.

Ms Burchill said he’d spent six months behind bars since January but she wouldn’t hesitate to put him away for longer if he failed to complete his rehab program and reoffended.

“Are you the real deal about this? You tell me why I should let you go to Odyssey (House),” Ms Burchill said.

“The trauma you’ve given other people is massive … when you’re off your face, not just with ice, but with whatever you can get in your mouth, you’re a walking weapon.

“You terrify people.”

Biyik was released to rehab and is due back at court at a later date for sentencing.
