A baby is in a critical condition in hospital after a serious car accident on a troubled Yarra Glen road bend.

Victoria Police major collision detectives are investigating the head-on crash between a Volkswagen Golf hatchback and a four-wheel-drive on Melba Highway in Yering about 3.45pm on Friday, July 3.

This is the second major incident this month on the bend outside Yering Station winery with emergency services called after a semi-trailer tipped over earlier this month.

The Melba Highway was closed for several hours while police investigated.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said police believe the driver of the hatch-back, a 21-year-old Mt Evelyn mother somehow lost control around the bend and veered into the path of an oncoming 4WD.

Sgt Amos said a third car travelling behind the 4WD was also caught up in the accident.

He said crash impacted the rear passenger door and the woman’s baby son was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The woman was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“He’s a very, very sick little boy,” Sgt Amos said.

“He’s still in hospital and we’ve all got our fingers crossed that in coming days his starts to make a recover.”

Sgt Amos said detectives were still looking into the accident and urged anyone with dashcam footage or who had more information on the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.

The 61-year-old 4WD driver, a Yarra Glen woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

The sole occupant of the sedan, a 29-year-old Dandenong man, was not injured.
