Work starts on Kinley housing development in Lilydale
Construction is set to start on a major new housing development in an old quarry in Melbourne’s east, in the area’s biggest land release in 25 years. The estate will include more than 3000 homes, the first of which will be ready next year.

A mix of buyers have jumped at the chance to live in the biggest new residential development in the east, with 50 blocks of land sold at the former Lilydale quarry.
The Kinley development, based at the old Cave Hill Quarry, will include about 3200 new homes for 8000 people, with sales kicking off last October.
On the Kinley Facebook page, the estate has been dubbed “Melbourne’s newest eastern suburb”.
Speaking to Leader earlier this month, Intrapac Property chief operating officer Max Shifman said interest in the development had been strong.
“Particularly given it’s no secret it’s been a tougher market that we’ve been selling into,” Mr Shifman said.
“We’ve just ticked over our 50th sale and inquiry rates have been extremely strong and we’re very happy with how things are going so far.”
Mr Shifman said first-home buyers, young professional couples, and people looking to downsize were among those who had bought blocks.
“There is quite a lot from the local area, but we’re really starting to see a much wider catchment come through,” Mr Shifman said.
He said work on civil construction, including new roads and paths, would start soon, with the first people to be living in their homes by the end of next year.
Mr Shifman said the east of Melbourne had always been seen as a premium area.
“There has not been a land release of this scale for about 25 years and it’s really the last one of any scale,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity to be part of the last and frankly the best masterplanned community in the east of Melbourne.”
He said people living in the estate wold be close to public transport, the Yarra Valley, and established schools, shops, supermarkets and community facilities.

He said the site had a fantastic history including links to Dame Nellie Melba, and some incredible buildings and structures on the site would be retained.
According to a post on the Kinley Facebook page the streets within the estate will be named in honour of those who served in World War II and worked on the Lilydale Quarry.
Mr Shifman said they also wanted to develop a new Kinley train station, between Mooroolbark and Lilydale stations.
“Having a new station on the site would really complete the area for us,” Mr Shifman said.
House and land packages at the site range from under $650,000 up to $800,000.
Mr Shifman said it would take about 12 years for the entire project to be complete.
