Images of the latest phase of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination project have been unveiled, two months before the first trails open to the public.
A major steel bike bridge will be constructed over Old Warburton Rd to help connect 100km of mountain bike trails in the Yarra State Forest, linking the Mt Tugwell and Mt Little Joe trail networks.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child said he was “so glad” to see this bridge build begin after councillors awarded the tender to construction company Road & Bridge.
“It means we won’t have conflict between motorists and mountain bike riders,” he said.
Construction on the bridge is scheduled to begin in June and be completed by late 2025.
Riders will also soon be able to bike along 30km of trails as construction of stage 1A of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination project nears completion.
“At this point we are anticipating that stage 1A will be open around mid to late July 2025, although the extended dry summer conditions are affecting the curing process of some of the newly completed trails,” Mr Child said.
“We will continue to monitor the trails and provide updates as we get closer to the anticipated opening.”
The new trails will begin at the Wesburn Park trail head and are designed for families and beginner riders.
“While we’re excited that families and beginner riders will be able to experience the first 30km of trails, we know more experienced riders will be looking forward to the next stage, when more challenging trails and features will open,” Mr Child said.
“Opening sections of the trail at different stages aims to build visitation slowly and enables us to manage any early teething problems.”
