Knox Private Hospital has opened its Day Surgery Centre as part of its multimillion-dollar expansion.
The Wantirna South’s new health hub is now open and has a range of general and specialist services including endoscopy, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The day centre marks the first milestone in the more than $50 million project, which will also include the new emergency department opening in March.
As well as the emergency department, a new cardiac catheter lab — to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease — is also expected to open in a few weeks.
Knox Leader previously reported the hospital closed its maternity ward, obstetric and neonatal services in January 2019 because of low birth rates, to make way for an expanded emergency department, cardiac and surgical services.
The hospital’s general manager, Claire Fogarty, said the day centre allowed the healthcare operator to expand on an already comprehensive range of medical, surgical, cardiac and emergency services offered.
“Knox Private Hospital is committed to meeting the current and future demands of the region’s growing population,” Ms Fogarty said.
She said there were more than 50 new staff positions created at the centre.

“We also welcomed a number of new doctors, adding to our exceptional team of visiting medical specialists who have consolidated their practice with us,” she said.
Gastroenterologist Dr Sam Battaglia, a 20-year veteran physician at the hospital, performed the first procedure at the centre.
“Patients will experience ease of flow through the new day centre with courteous, professional and helpful staff from admission to discharge,” Dr Battaglia said.
