THE SEVILLE community says the Anzac Centenary is the perfect time to reveal its plans to build a war memorial to honour the town’s veterans.
The modern memorial, which will stand in the open space at the front of the Water Play Park, will fill the void left by the former war memorial at the town’s now-closed swimming pool.
The town’s only other remaining memorials are an old bus shelter and a roll call plaque at the public hall.
Seville War Memorial Committee member Wayne Deklijn said the new memorial would give a space for the community to gather and hold ceremonies.
Mr Deklijin said the structure would be made from four double-sided glass panels and would pay tribute to Seville’s war hero George Ingram, who was awarded the last Australian Victoria Cross of World War I.
The other panels were dedicated to Seville women’s contribution to the war effort and the history of the military in the Yarra Valley.
“We’ve always wanted to put in a new memorial to replace the swimming pool and we wanted an official one where we could hold services and tell the story about Seville’s involvement in the wars,” Mr Deklijn said.
“It will be installed as a piece of art that will also be a gathering space for the community and hopefully even a tourist attraction.
“Because it will be made of glass, it can be lit up during the night.”
The project is expected to cost $160,000 and the committee was fundraising with the support of businesses including Bendigo Bank and Supa IGA.
The committee also has a Facebook page to detail the memorial’s progress and fundraiser events.
