A classic car from the early 1970s has been impounded after a man was caught allegedly drink driving and hooning with children on board.

Croydon police received multiple calls from the public just before 6pm on March 5, with reports of a car driving erratically near Ringwood North Primary School on Oban Rd.

Police said they tracked down the driver who was later breath-tested and recorded a blood alcohol reading of .054.

Croydon police constable Nicole Wilcox confirmed children were on board the 1971 red and white striped Chevrolet Coupe driven by the man.

It is unclear how many children were inside the car or if they were related to the driver.

The car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $879.

Constable Wilcox said the male driver, whose age and suburb has not been released, would be charged on summons with alleged drink driving and other driving offences.

He will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Constable Wilcox said officers were making further inquiries about the man and continuing their investigations into the incident.
