A young man training to be a machinist in the RAN has been unmasked as a gun nut after imitation firearms, ammunition, knuckledusters and a suspected pipe bomb were all discovered at the house he shared with his parents.
Sam Naim fronted Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to weapons offences.
The court heard police and the Australian Border Force searched the family home in the eastern suburbs on December 22, 2022, where they found firearm parts, a rifle under construction, imitation handguns, ammunition, small projectiles, silencers and a small amount of cannabis.

Investigators then discovered what they suspected to be a pipe bomb in a cupboard.
The search of the home was immediately suspended as experts investigated the suspected bomb.
The device was revealed to be a homemade conducted energy device and the search was resumed.
Naim’s phone was also seized which contained images of the imitation handguns.
During his police interview Naim said “everything was legal” and that he had an imitation firearms permit which he obtained two years prior.
Naim said building a rifle was his “holiday project.”
Naim was fined $1250 for the weaponry without conviction.
All the imitation firearms were ordered to be destroyed.
