A novel idea to sell his aeroplane from his front lawn has taken flight for a Chirnside Park man, with the aircraft creating quite the stir.

In the lead up to Christmas, Richard Gee, a qualified pilot, decided to put his small plane on the market, deciding his yard was the perfect spot to showcase the Australian made Jabiru aircraft.

“It was a bit of a novelty; coming up to Christmas I thought I’d put my little aeroplane under the Christmas tree,” he said.

“It has created quite a buzz, with cars stopping out the front.

“It’s become a bit of a tourist attraction.

“Mums and dads come up with their kids and they sit in it and take some photos.”

“People say ‘I hope you don’t mind if we come and take a picture - we’ve never seen an aeroplane sitting on someone’s lawn.”

And the unusual sale location has proved to be a winner, with Mr Gee negotiating with a potential buyer who is interested in snapping up the two-seater light sports aircraft.

Mr Gee said he and his wife had lived in their home in Edwards Rd for 52 years and were devastated when VicRoads put traffic lights out the front.

But the upside is the lights have made their yard a “fabulous place” to sell stuff, with drivers able to get a good view of their lawn while they’re stopped.

“We hate the traffic lights but the positive is it’s a fabulous place to sell stuff,” he said.

“I’ve had cars there, I’ve had caravans, I’ve had landscaping rocks, I’ve had all sorts of stuff.”

Richard Gee has received a huge reaction to his plane.

Mr Gee said the only downside of the experience has been trolls spreading lies about the aircraft online, claiming it had been involved in a crash, which Mr Gee said was untrue.

“I cannot understand why someone would want to do that to another individual,” he said.

Mr Gee is also quite well known in Chirnside Park as “the Santa Claus man” thanks to a 5m Santa he puts up in his yard each year, along with a big Christmas lights display.

James Unkles, who lives nearby, alerted the 3AW Rumour File to the plane, and said he had to look twice when he first spotted it in the yard.

“I was amazed,” he said.

“The owner is very entrepreneurial.

“The only difficulty will be if people want to take a test drive.

“I looked at it and thought to myself I’d love to have my pilot’s licence.”
